I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a par of every tribute they can’t own. That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I. A few steps into the woods grows a bank of wildflowers. Perhaps they are really weeds of some sort, but they have blossoms in beautiful shades of violet and yellow and white. I gather up an armful and come back to Rue’s side. Slowly, one stem at a time, I decorate her body in the flowers. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair in bright colors. They’ll have to show it. Or, even if they choose to turn the cameras elsewhere at this moment, they’ll have to bring them back when they collect the bodies and everyone will see her then and know I did it. I step back and take one last look at Rue. She could really be asleep in that meadow after all. “Bye, Rue,” I whisper. I press the three middle fingers of my left hand against my lips and hold them out in her direction. Then I walk away without looking back.

A spark that will inflame a nation

Hate Crime Investigation of the Day: Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five who emigrated from Iraq with her husband 17 years ago, was found severely beaten inside her El Cajon, California home next to a note that allegedly read “go back to your own country. You’re a terrorist.”
Alawadi was rushed to the hospital, but passed away after being taken off life support yesterday afternoon.
One of her three daughters, Fatima Al Himidi, told KUSI she found Alawadi unconscious in the dining room. The attacker had apparently broken in through the sliding glass door and assaulted Alawadi repeatedly with a tire iron. Al Himidi said the attacker was gone by the time she came downstairs.
According to Lt. Mark Coit of the El Cajon police, the family had received a note similar to the one left near Alawadi earlier this month, but thought it was a prank, so did not bother reporting it to authorities.
“Given the fact of these notes left, we’re obviously concerned about the possibility of a hate crime,” said the executive director of CAIR’s San Diego branch, Hanif Mohebi. “I don’t think anyone would disagree this is a coldblooded murder.”
Investigators say they believe this was “an isolated incident,” and a hate crime is just “one of the possibilities” they are exploring.

I dare you to stop scrolling through your dashboard. Stop checking your Facebook newsfeed that you’ve already checked two seconds ago. Stop updating your Twitter and seeing what your favorite celebrities are saying. Stop watching funny and nonsense videos on Youtube. Take time to educate yourself to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in this world. This is your chance! WATCH THIS VIDEO.

I’d really like to see this be successful.

EDIT: here are my worries: people on the internet have a notoriously short attention span. yeah sure this blows up today, but tomorrow will it still have this traction? what about a week from now? a lot can happen in the week. all we need is for another celebrity to die or another awards show and suddenly tumblr will have forgotten about this video as quickly as the issue exploded. we’re good about getting the word out quickly, but sustaining the kind of attention and pressure on an issue when people hardly have the attention to read twitter updates is difficult.

I’ve waited all day to watch this because I knew it would be intense, but it was more than I thought. Please, take half an hour that you would have devoted to a TV show, and watch this. Spread this.

I just canceled my Netflix (sorry David) and pledged that money to Tri because I know this can work.
